It's nearly impossible to learn the contours and subtleties of the head without studying the skull. Life-drawing is also essential. Learning from photographs alone is difficult, as the head turns sharply and foreshortens- confusing if you don't already know planes of face. -relationship to the neck is also very important. Both Reilly and Hogarth are great refs. #1 get a skull and draw from every angle you can :)

And owning a skull to sketch as well as an Asaro head is some of the best things you can do for yourself.
