I get a lot of questions on the Frank Reilly method since I was trained in it under Jeff Watts, Erik Gist, Lucas Graciano and Ben Young. I really can’t give a comprehensive guide on it and there’s very little information on it. I don’t think I am the best person to talk about it though since I’ve only been trained in it for a 6 month duration.

But here’s a video from Glen Orbik. I noticed Nathan Fowkes also uses the Frank Reilly method in his portraits.

Fred Fixler was also trained in it who has a lot of notes up here. Not so much on the Reilly method but regardless good notes.

Do you listen to any artist's podcasts or interviews while you work? Or have any suggestions for where to find good one? Thanks 8)

http://www.radiolab.org/series/podcasts/ - Not so much dealing with artists but this is just great, they are pretty lengthy and amazing to work to and it opens up for great discussion with people if you can get them to listen to the same ones you are. Things like learning that what is happening at this moment, has already happened and hearing is your fastest sense. Also learning how sleep works and why we need it, taught me a lot about the learning process in correlation with sleep.

http://www.sidebarnation.com/ is pretty great because well it’s listening to amazing artists talk about their craft.

Has a ton of awesome artist interviews hosted by Dave Rapoza and Dan Warren. They also have ” Critters” which is their critique videos which have a lot of great critiques to learn from.

Other then that I’m usually listening to How Stuff Works ( which is on netflix now!), NOVA science NOW, documentaries and what’s happening with world news.

BTW I’ll be getting to peoples asks this weekend, the ones I’ll need to make tutorials for that’s going to have to wait until I move back to San Diego at the end of the month. Lot of stuff on my plate atm. But I’ll be getting to everyone! Thank you so much for all your questions!

AWESOME!! Free video drawing! These videos are absolutely fantastic. I’m going to do a lengthy review of them sometime but really love all the videos I bought from CDW/CDWA so far. Bought James Paick 1-2 and John Park 1-3 and they’ve been all very educational.

In at least Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign CS5 (maybe other programs/versions too), if you go to Window > Extensions > Kuler, you get a palette with preset color palettes that compliment each other, as well as a tool to help you make new ones. Then you can save it to the Kuler list, or to your Swatches palette.

Okay I fixed it to where if you save the images it’ll be at the original size I hotlinked them as but it won’t show up on tumblr that size for some reason no matter how much coding hoop jumping I go through. Seems tumblr has a fixed width which makes sense for Ipad browsing.

If you save the images you’ll be fine they won’t be super tiny. If you do Save Page As and save the page it’ll dump all the images into a folder and you can grab everything from there easy peasy lemon squeezy!

And with designing armor, getting a good understanding of what makes up an armor and how it’s assembled helps a ton. I usually draw my figures nude and draw them like I’m dressing them up. Helps a ton with believability and as a concept artist many times you have a base then you equip shoulder pads, helm, arm guards, boots and ect and have to do a completely turn around for every armor with things on and off. You just get used to building up and drawing armors that way after awhile.

But gather as much ref as you can and build a good visual library. If there is a museum you can go to fantastic! Definitely go there, take pictures, do sketches and ask museum curators questions if they are around. No questions is a dumb question.

Pininterest and flicker are amazing resource sites and tumblr tends to be as well, If anything make a tumblr you post your ref up at to keep it categorized. I have one myself and just don’t pimp it out since it’s more for me which is why I rarely put sources on any of the sets.

But learn all you can about armors! Seriously the more you study about them the more it greatly impacts your work as a concept artist/illustrator. I know tons of illustrators that own suits of armors and use them to take reference pictures.

Also study artists and games that have done some creative things with armors for inspiration!

Sketch them when you can as well! It’s hard to draw something from imagination if you never drawn it at all. I’m going to be honest here and the stuff I upload is about 40% of the work I do. I do a lot of studies, I had to stop recently because I’m bogged down with work and moving but I do a ton of pencil studies just traveling on the trolley or just as a break or warm up inbetween jobs. I tend to sketch in pen and brush pen because it makes me commit to a drawing much more. If i mess up, I’ll redraw it and keep redrawing it until I feel it’s successful and can move on.

But understanding and educating yourself on both the subjects gives you a knowledge base to pull from. Though most artists still use ref when they can and just remix a lot into new but familiar things.

Hope this helps! I’m still going to be answering everyone’s ask but for the ones I gotta pull a lot of ref for I’ll make into singular posts like this.

So 0033/Red Ink Teacher has been updating with some more great sheets of hands and feet.

These are amazing to study from since he breaks down the forms pretty well and I guarantee after doing a few studies of their feet or hands you pick up really quick on how to break them down yourself to suit your needs. When all I owe is cleared away definitely want to do a long series of studies of his after I acquire some paintbrushes and ink from here.
